Seed orchards and the link to long-term tree breeding in response to climate change

چکیده
Traditional tree improvement programs start with deliberate phenotypic selection of candidate trees followed by rounds of recurrent selection characterized by cumulative incremental gain advancements. While effective, the process is elaborate, quantitatively oriented, and follows sophisticated breeding theories. Breeding and testing start with the selection of pre-determined mating designs, requiring years to complete and often is not error free, followed by experimentally elaborate, large scale, multiple sites field testing. This process is costly, takes long time to complete, and most of all, requires sustained organizational commitments for its continuation. Here I present an innovative approach that allows the capture of the genetic gain attained through conventional tree improvement programs without conducting any crosses and with simplified or possibly without the establishment of progeny test trials. The method is called “Breeding Without Breeding” and is based on combining the use of phenotypic pre-selection of better individuals, spatial statistics, informative DNA markers for pedigree reconstruction to assemble fulland half-sib families after wind pollination, and quantitative genetics analyses to identify elite genotypes for seed orchards establishment. BWB’s potential and applicability is illustrated through a retrospective study of a “conventional” Douglas-fir breeding program as well as an experimental trial of western larch. Results demonstrated the method’s effectiveness in capturing substantial amount of the genetic gain with relatively minimal efforts and allowed the development of a framework for its utility as an alternative to conventional breeding programs.

Response of conifers to UV-B and climate in mountain areas
The present study was focused to examine the combined effects of climate and ultraviolet-B radiation on conifer tree-ring density. Statistical methods were employed to extract tree responses in annual ring density and to identify functional relationship in trees when the level of ultraviolet-B radiation changes regardless of climate variations. In this study, the consideration was given to the ...
متن کاملMorpho-Physiological Variation of White Spruce Seedlings from Various Seed Sources and Implications for Deployment under Climate Change
Because of changes in climatic conditions, tree seeds originating from breeding programs may no longer be suited to sites where they are currently sent. As a consequence, new seed zones may have to be delineated. Assisted migration consists of transferring seed sources that match the future climatic conditions to which they are currently adapted. It represents a strategy that could be used to m...

Nutritional and hormonal programs are one of the important ways of improving goat reproductive performance. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the effect of using barley seed and eCG at the same time on the reproductive performance of goat in nomadic breeding conditions. The number of 60 goats of two to three-year-old in the breeding season and 60 goats of three to four-y...

Climate change stand as the most important challenge in the future. Horticulture is one of the most sensitive and vulnerable sectors to the climate change. Climate change and global warming will endanger the production of agricultural products and food security. Because of required longer time to fruit production, fruit trees are heavily susceptible to damage from climate change. The purpose of...
